Seymour Venson Adolph, Jr., was born April 6, 1954, to Seymour and Barbara (Jackson) Adolph. Lovingly, he was nicknamed Sonny by his mother, a nickname that has followed him throughout his life. Having been born into a family loaded with Baptist preachers, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of seven, and he was baptized by his father. As a small child his maternal grandmother read the Bible to him, and as she aged it became his joy to read the Bible to her.

Sonny attended the public schools of Houston, TX. After graduating from high school, Sonny attended Texas Southern University. An internal struggle with his call to ministry, and ongoing debates with an atheist professor, ultimately led to him leave Texas Southern to accept his call to ministry. Shortly after that, he became a student at Union Bible College and Seminary. He would later graduate from William Carey College, and he pursued graduate studies at the University of Mobile. In May of 2011, he was honored by William Carey University with an Honorary Doctorate.

With the hand of Lord upon him, Sonny entered the ministry in 1974. He began his Pastoral journey in 1979, Pastoring churches in Southeast Texas. More recently, He served as Pastor of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Gulfport, MS, from August 1990 until December 2021. He has served as Moderator of the Gulf Coast Missionary Baptist District Association. Later, he served as President of that organization’s Congress of Christian Education. He also served as 3rd Vice Moderator, where he oversaw the district’s endeavors in Christian Education. He also served as the Executive Director of Home Missions for the General Missionary Baptist State Convention of Mississippi, and he has served on the Governance Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. He has also been a part the National Baptist Sunday School Publishing Board’s writing staff. Since leaving his last pastorate, he has written his first book, entitled “Checking Church Vital Signs.” In July of 2024, he became the Executive Director of the Ministerial Development Department of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, under the Direction of Bishop Albert Jamison. He and his wife, Karen, have also written songs that were taught at the Gospel Music Workshop of America.

He is blessed to have at his side his wife, Karen Louise Blanton-Adolph; two adult daughters, Seymoura and Sameisha, along with four grandchildren, Shamar, Olivia, Layla, and Leah. Sonny is a lover of gospel music.  And, while he has written several songs himself, his favorite song is still his life’s theme, “If I Can Help Somebody…”  The prayers of the saints are requested, as this servant of God continues his Journey with Jesus.

As Deacons, the mission is to worship God with all their being. They are to obey Christ by assisting the Pastor in his mission and vision (Acts 6:2-4); administration of the ordinances, strengthening his hand in his labors, and working in harmony with him to exercise watch care of the spiritual interest of the church. Furthermore, our deacons strive to provide practical and supportive ministry through acts of service to all other ministries within the body of Christ.
